During our recent trip to Nuwara Eliya, after spending a night at Xavier’s Cottage, we headed towards a place that had already left a special memory for us — Meena Amma’s Tea Experience.

This was actually our second visit. We first stayed here in December 2023, and the experience was so unique that we knew we wanted to return one day.

Unlike a traditional hotel stay, this experience is about living in a traditional Sri Lankan tea estate line room, enjoying authentic home-cooked meals, and experiencing the slower rural lifestyle of the hill country.

About Meena Amma’s Tea Experience

Meena Amma’s Tea Experience is located near Jetwing Warwick Gardens, surrounded by beautiful tea plantations owned by Jetwing.

The accommodation itself is a traditional line room, which has been slightly modified to welcome travelers.

For those unfamiliar, line rooms were historically used as housing for tea estate workers, making this stay not just accommodation but also a cultural experience.

Booking Our Second Visit

The first time we visited in December 2023, we made the booking directly through the Jetwing Hotels website.

However, this time when we checked the website, the booking option was not available, so we ended up making our reservation through another booking platform.

One thing to note is that the stay is offered as a full board experience, meaning:

• Breakfast
• Lunch
• Dinner

are all included in the package.

This is ideal since the location is quite remote and dining options nearby are limited.

Arrival and Traditional Welcome

When we arrived, Meena Amma greeted us warmly with traditional offerings, making us feel immediately welcome.

The hospitality here is something that truly stands out. You don’t feel like a guest in a hotel — instead, it feels more like visiting someone’s home in the hill country.

Another thing to keep in mind is that mobile connectivity and data signals can be weak in this area, which actually helps you disconnect and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The Line Room Stay Experience

The room itself follows the traditional line room layout, though it has been slightly upgraded for travelers.

Our room was:

• Spacious and comfortable
• Equipped with basic amenities
• Had a spacious bathroom

However, since this is meant to preserve the authentic line room experience, you won’t find luxury features here.

For example:

• No electric kettle in the room
• No tea or coffee station
• No luxury amenities

But if you need anything, Meena Amma is always happy to prepare it for you.

Despite the cold hill country weather outside, the room stayed warm enough at night, and we didn’t need heaters.

Authentic Home-Cooked Food Experience

One of the biggest highlights of this stay is the food.

All meals are cooked by Meena Amma herself using traditional wood-fired stoves in her kitchen.

Even the meals are served inside her kitchen, creating a truly authentic Sri Lankan dining experience.

Evening Tea and Wadei

In the evening, Meena Amma prepared fresh Wadei and served them with tea.

They were crispy, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying after our journey.

Even our little one enjoyed the wadei, which made the moment even more special.

Dinner – Rice and Curry

For dinner, we were served rice and curry with chicken.

The meal was:

• Fresh
• Flavorful
• Comforting

Simple home-style cooking often tastes better than restaurant meals, and this was definitely one of those cases.

Evening Walk Around the Tea Estate

Later in the evening we went for a walk around the surrounding tea estates.

The area is incredibly peaceful, with rolling green hills and quiet rural roads.

Since the nearby tea estates are also owned by Jetwing, the landscape is well maintained and beautiful.

It’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the calm atmosphere of Sri Lanka’s hill country.

Traditional Sri Lankan Breakfast

The next morning we were served a classic Sri Lankan breakfast.

Breakfast included:

• String hoppers
• Several curries
• Wadei
• Tea and coffee

The meal was delicious, filling, and freshly prepared.

After breakfast we enjoyed a relaxed morning surrounded by the peaceful scenery.

Visiting Jetwing Warwick Gardens

After lunch, we decided to take a short walk to Jetwing Warwick Gardens.

The hotel has beautiful gardens, and it’s a lovely place for a quiet walk.

We spent some time exploring the garden before heading back.

Parking and Access

One thing visitors should know is that parking is not available directly at the line room.

Instead, you need to park your vehicle at the Warwick Gardens car park.

From there, it’s about a 200 meter walk to the line room.

However, you can first drive closer to drop off your luggage, and then return to park the vehicle.

Our Final Lunch and Goodbye

Before checking out, we had our final meal at Meena Amma’s kitchen.

Lunch included:

• Rice and curry with fish
• A delicious Payasam dessert

The dessert was a perfect sweet ending to our stay.

After finishing lunch, it was time for us to say goodbye.

We left Meena Amma’s Tea Experience with the hope of visiting again someday.

Why We Love This Experience

What makes this stay special is that it is not about luxury.

It’s about:

• Authentic Sri Lankan hospitality
• Traditional home cooking
• Experiencing life in a tea estate
• Slowing down and enjoying nature

That’s exactly why we came back a second time.

When we were planning our Jaffna trip, one of the things we had to figure out was where to stay for a night in Karainagar. Our original preferred dates were already full, so we had to adjust the plan a little and move the stay to another available date in August. Even with that change, the process was hassle-free. Once we shared the details he needed, the booking was confirmed and we received the confirmation without any unnecessary back-and-forth.

That kind of smooth coordination always makes a big difference, especially when you are planning a family trip.

First Impressions on Arrival

We arrived at around 2.00 p.m., and our room was already ready for check-in. The resort is located within the wider army-managed premises, but once we got there, what stood out most to us was the setting. The location is beautiful. It is right by the beach, and within just a few steps, you are looking at the sea.

That beachfront access is really the highlight of the stay.

The beach itself was calm and inviting. During the daytime, the weather in Jaffna was extremely hot, so we avoided going into the water under the strong sun. But by evening, once the heat eased off, we headed to the beach as a family. The sea was lovely, and all three of us — myself, my wife, and our little daughter — really enjoyed that time in the water together. Since we now travel as a family with our daughter joining our adventures too, moments like these feel even more special.

It turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the stay.

A Stay That Felt Simple and Relaxing

This is not a luxury resort, and it is better to go there knowing that. The room was quite basic, with the essential amenities needed for a short overnight stay. There was a bed, the required furniture, and drinking water was provided separately. The bathroom did not have hot water, which was not a major issue for us personally, except when it came to bathing our baby after the sea.

That was the only small inconvenience we had during the stay.

But even then, the staff were extremely helpful. When we mentioned that we needed hot water for our child, the army personnel assisted us and arranged it. We really appreciated that gesture. Throughout the stay, everyone was kind, helpful, and approachable.

So while the room itself was nothing fancy, the hospitality and readiness to help left a positive impression on us.

Half Board Experience: Dinner and Breakfast

One thing we liked was that the meal preferences were confirmed in advance. If I remember correctly, Mr. Harsha called us the day before to check what we preferred for dinner and breakfast. That small step made the experience feel more organized and thoughtful.

For dinner, we requested fried rice, and it turned out to be very satisfying. It came with tasty side dishes, and we also had fried prawns, which we really enjoyed. The meal was filling and flavorful after spending time at the beach. We were also told that additional drinks could be arranged if needed.

The next morning, we had requested milk rice for breakfast, and that too was delicious. It was simple, comforting, and a great way to start the day. Overall, we genuinely enjoyed the food during this stay.

For a one-night half-board visit, the meal experience was definitely a plus.

The Beach Is the Real Star Here

If you are considering Casuarina Breeze Resort, I would say the real reason to stay here is the location. Karainagar is home to Casuarina Beach, which is widely known for its shallow, calm waters and white sand. That is exactly the kind of environment that makes an evening sea bath enjoyable, especially for families.

In the early morning too, the beach looked inviting, and it would probably be a nice time to go into the water before the sun gets too harsh. We did not spend much time there that morning, but depending on the season and the weather, early hours would likely be the best time for another swim.

Also, if you are staying here, Casuarina Beach itself is nearby, so the location works well if you want a relaxed beach stop during your Jaffna itinerary.

Final Thoughts

Our stay at Casuarina Breeze Resort in Karainagar, Jaffna was a very positive one.

What stood out most for us was the smooth and easy booking process, the helpful coordination by Mr. Harsha, the calm beachfront setting, the enjoyable half-board meals, and the supportive attitude of the staff throughout our stay.

This is not the kind of place you book for luxury interiors or upscale room features. Instead, it is a simple stay in a beautiful location, ideal for travelers who want easy beach access, a quiet atmosphere, and a relaxed overnight stop in Karainagar.

In fact, by the time we were leaving, one thing we all felt was that one night was simply not enough. The surroundings were peaceful, the beach was enjoyable, and the overall experience was so relaxing that we felt staying for two days would have been even better.

We had a really good experience as a family, and we would happily visit again in the future.

Xavier’s Cottage is a small colonial-style bungalow managed by the same hospitality group behind Jetwing St. Andrew's. Unlike a typical hotel, the cottage has only three rooms, creating a very quiet and private atmosphere.

During our stay, only two rooms were occupied, which made the whole experience feel even more peaceful.

The cottage is hosted by a personal butler service, and in our case, Umeshan took care of everything during our stay. From arranging meals to preparing tea, he made sure we were comfortable throughout the visit.

First Impressions and Check-In

When we checked in, the cottage immediately gave us the feeling of staying in an old British-era bungalow. The property has a small garden area, perfect for sitting outside with a cup of tea and enjoying the cool Nuwara Eliya weather.

Inside the cottage, there is a cozy shared lounge area featuring:

• Comfortable sofas
• A piano
• A chess board
• Books to read
• Relaxing common seating space

It’s a perfect place to unwind in the evening after exploring the town.

Our Room – Twin Room Experience

We stayed in the Twin Room, which was spacious and comfortable.

The room included all the amenities we needed for our short stay. While the room was comfortable, one thing we noticed was that our room didn’t have windows, which made it quite dark during the daytime since there was a power cut during the day time that we checked in.

The Suite Rooms, however, are noticeably larger and do include windows, so if you prefer more natural light, that might be the better option.

Power Cut Experience

One unexpected situation during our stay was a power cut during the daytime. Unfortunately, the generator was not working initially, and there was no electricity until around 5 PM.

Since our room didn’t have windows, the room became quite dark, which was a bit inconvenient.

The staff quickly informed the maintenance team and later repaired the generator to make sure there wouldn’t be issues during the night.

One small downside was that the generator wasn’t started earlier in the day, which would have helped since we needed some hot water.

Still, the team tried to resolve the issue before nighttime, and thankfully we didn’t face any power issues later.

Afternoon Visit to Gregory Park

Since there was no power during the day, we decided to explore nearby attractions.

One place we visited was:

Gregory Lake

Gregory Park is one of the most popular spots in Nuwara Eliya. The cool breeze, lake views, and relaxing atmosphere made it a great place to spend a few hours before heading back to the cottage.

Our little one also enjoyed the fresh air and open space.

Dinner at Jetwing St. Andrew’s

Food is not prepared directly at Xavier’s Cottage. Instead, meals are prepared at Jetwing St. Andrew’s and either:

• Served at the cottage, or
• Guests can dine at St. Andrew’s restaurant.

Our butler Umeshan gave us both options, and we decided to have dinner at St. Andrew’s.

The dinner was served as a set menu, mainly because there were only a few guests that evening. Despite that, the meal was delicious and very satisfying.

Every dish was well prepared and flavorful, making it one of the highlights of our stay.

Night at the Cottage

Later in the evening, Umeshan kindly prepared us a warm cup of tea, which felt perfect in the cool Nuwara Eliya weather.

The peaceful environment of the cottage made it a relaxing place to wind down for the night. Our daughter also seemed to enjoy the quiet surroundings and slept comfortably.

Breakfast Experience

Breakfast was also served at Jetwing St. Andrew’s the next morning.

It was a buffet breakfast with a good spread of options including both Western and Sri Lankan items. Everything we tried was fresh and tasty, making it a great start to the day.

A Small Morning Disturbance

Early in the morning we heard bells ringing from a nearby religious place, which was a little disturbing if you prefer to sleep in late.

However, since Nuwara Eliya is a small town surrounded by churches and temples, this is something that can occasionally happen depending on the location.

Checkout Experience

After breakfast we returned to the cottage, packed our bags, and checked out around 11:30 AM.

The checkout process was smooth and quick.

Traveling with Our Little One

Since our daughter recently joined our travels, we always pay attention to how family-friendly a place is.

Xavier’s Cottage turned out to be a pleasant stay for families as well, mainly because of the quiet atmosphere and spacious rooms.

Our little one clearly enjoyed the stay and the peaceful environment.

We checked out from Jetwing Oatlands after a full breakfast and hit the road toward Ambewela. The drive itself was a treat—mountains veiled in mist, pine forests on either side, and the cool highland breeze adding a calm rhythm to the journey.

We made our first stop at Simply Strawberries by Jagro, a quaint café known for its strawberry treats and garden ambiance. We enjoyed some light refreshments while taking in the green views.

Though we skipped the New Zealand Farm this time (having explored it on a previous visit), we took a slow scenic drive past Ambewela Station before turning back. A cup of milk tea from the Ambewela Farm coffee shop hit the spot before we continued to Kande Ela Reservoir, a quiet, picturesque spot surrounded by forest and water. We also stopped for a snack—pol rotti with curry—hoping to recreate the magic of a previous visit, though this time, the flavors didn’t quite hit the mark.

🛏️ Our Stay at Tranquil Villa

Tranquil Villa is a cozy, six-room property perched in the Ambewela highlands. We had originally booked an upstairs room with a reservoir view, but due to availability, were offered a ground-floor room instead. While it lacked the sweeping view, it was spacious, clean, and could easily accommodate 3–4 people. Given the positive reviews—and a recommendation from a friend—we decided to keep the booking, and we’re glad we did.

The property felt quiet and peaceful, surrounded by farmlands. Our baby enjoyed the open space and evening walk we took just outside the villa. The fresh air and pastoral charm of Ambewela set a soothing tone for the day.

🍛 Meals with a View (and a Few Surprises)

Though we booked our stay with breakfast included, we ended up enjoying several meals at the villa. Since we hadn’t had a full lunch that day, we ordered a chicken fried rice to share—it came in a generous portion and was very reasonable for the price. We dined in the restaurant area on the first floor, which offered a beautiful view of the Kande Ela Reservoir. The dining space also had a cozy lounge area with sofas and a TV, perfect for relaxing.

Later in the evening, we ordered sandwiches with fries to our room—handy with the baby, though the taste was average. With no nearby restaurants, we opted to have dinner at the hotel again: a creamy pasta and soup, which turned out to be filling and satisfying.

That night, we requested a room heater since temperatures dipped significantly. While it came with an extra charge, it made the night much more comfortable.

🍳 A Hearty Highlands Breakfast

The next morning, we were told breakfast would be served buffet-style, likely because the villa was fully booked. The spread was delightful: rice, bread, string hoppers, dhal curry, chicken curry, fish curry, eggs, pol sambol, and the standout—devilled dried fish (bedum), which was spicy, flavorful, and stole the show.

It was easily one of the best breakfasts we had on this trip—generous, local, and full of flavor. After a final bit of lounging and packing, we checked out and set our sights on our next destination: Kent Cottage at Little England Cottages, Nuwara Eliya.

🧳 Final Thoughts

Our stay at Tranquil Villa was quiet, comfortable, and exactly what we needed after two busy days in Nuwara Eliya. The staff were kind, the food exceeded expectations, and the overall vibe was just that—tranquil.

While we missed having a room with a view, the ground floor space was still more than enough for our little family. This spot is ideal for couples or families who want to experience Ambewela’s slower pace, farm-side surroundings, and scenic views without sacrificing comfort.

We hit the road from Colombo around 6:00 AM, aiming to beat the traffic and catch the crisp morning air of the upcountry. After a breakfast stop along the way, we gradually made our way up the winding highland roads—taking it slow and soaking in the views.

One of the highlights en route was a relaxing stop at Mlesna Tea Castle, St. Clair. With a small tea museum, an impressive selection of flavored teas, and a panoramic rooftop view of Devon Falls, it’s a must-visit for anyone traveling this route. 🍛 A Familiar Bite Before Check-In

We reached Nuwara Eliya around 12:30 PM. Hungry and nostalgic, we stopped at Sambole, a local spot we’d enjoyed during a 2023 visit. While the management seemed to have changed, the food was still tasty and affordable. After a quick fried rice lunch, we headed toward our home for the next two nights.

Tucked just a short walk from Jetwing St. Andrew’s, Oatlands by Jetwing felt like stepping into a postcard from colonial Ceylon. This beautifully restored four-room bungalow is ideal for those seeking tranquility without the crowd of larger hotels.

We were the only guests at the bungalow during our stay, and the exclusivity made it feel even more like home. Initially, we expected à la carte meals to be served at the bungalow itself. But to our surprise, both breakfast and dinner were served at Jetwing St. Andrew’s—a pleasant twist, given its reputation for excellent dining.

🌿 Gregory Park & a Beautiful Dinner

After a restful check-in and our packed lunch, we headed to Gregory Park around 5:00 PM. Being a long weekend, it was lively and crowded—great for people-watching and soaking in the cool, festive vibe.

As dusk settled, we freshened up and drove to Jetwing St. Andrew’s (walking was an option too, but the stroller made driving easier). The staff greeted us warmly, reserved a table near the buffet for convenience, and ensured everything was smooth—even with a curious toddler in tow!

We noticed a mix of guests from other Jetwing properties, like Broomfield, also dining there. The buffet was impressive—wide variety, flavorful dishes, and warm hospitality that Jetwing is known for.

🛏️ Inside the Bungalow

The Oatlands bungalow was spacious and cozy. With:

• Four bedrooms
• A lounge full of books and board games
• A dining area and a staff kitchen (which we were kindly allowed to use for preparing baby food)
• A peaceful garden with benches—perfect for evening tea

Though it’s not a 5-star in-room experience, the amenities met all our needs. There was a heater in the room (a must in Nuwara Eliya), clean toiletries, and everything was well-kept. Staff member Jeewantha, who managed the place during our stay, was friendly, helpful, and made our visit seamless.

One thing to note: Wi-Fi connectivity was quite limited—so it’s a great spot to unplug and truly relax.

🌄 The Morning After

The next day started slow and serene. After a bit of a sleep-in, we returned to Jetwing St. Andrew’s for breakfast. The buffet again didn’t disappoint. Post-meal, we headed back to the bungalow, packed up, and set out toward Ambewela, our next stop.

After immersing ourselves in the beauty of the White Temple, our appetites were awakened, and Lin led us to a nearby restaurant to indulge in a traditional northern Thai delicacy: Khao Soi. Our considerations for selecting the perfect destination included accommodation and travel costs, locations, attractions, and overall convenience. After careful deliberation, we unanimously agreed on Thailand as our next travel destination. This comprehensive article will share our detailed plans for a 16-day exploration of Thailand, covering captivating cities such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya.

Accommodation Cost

When planning a trip, finding suitable accommodation that strikes a balance between comfort and cost is crucial. Thailand offers various options to cater to varying budgets and preferences. In our case, we were looking for comfortable yet affordable accommodations that would enhance our overall travel experience.

In Chiang Mai, we found numerous guesthouses and boutique hotels nestled amidst the city's charming streets. These accommodations provided a cozy ambiance and easy access to the city's cultural attractions.  Bangkok offered a diverse range of accommodations, from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious hotels in prime locations. Phuket and Pattaya had an abundance of beachfront resorts and cozy guesthouses, catering to travelers with various budgets.

By utilizing online travel platforms and booking websites, we were able to compare prices, read reviews, and secure affordable accommodations that met our requirements. It is advisable to book in advance to ensure the best deals, especially during peak travel seasons. Additionally, staying slightly away from tourist hotspots can often result in lower accommodation costs, while still providing easy access to attractions through public transportation.

Travel Cost

Understanding the costs associated with travel is essential to ensure a realistic and well-planned budget. From international flights to local transportation, careful consideration of these expenses is crucial. Here's how we approached the travel cost aspect of our Thailand trip:

• International Flights: Since we were traveling from a different country, we researched and compared flight prices to Thailand. By using flight comparison websites, and the official airline website we were able to find competitive fares. We recommend booking flights well in advance to secure the best deals and consider traveling during off-peak seasons to potentially find lower fares. We mainly used Google Flights and FindMyFare to Compare the pricing options.
• Domestic Transportation: In Thailand, domestic transportation options are abundant, offering convenience and affordability. To travel between cities, we planned to use a combination of domestic flights, trains, and buses. Domestic flights are the fastest option, particularly when covering longer distances, while trains and buses provide a more immersive and cost-effective travel experience.

In our case, we decided to take a domestic flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and from Bangkok to Phuket to save time and maximize our exploration opportunities. For shorter distances, such as traveling from Bangkok to Pattaya, we intended to use buses or private taxis for convenience.

• Local Transportation: Getting around within each city is an important consideration. In Bangkok, the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway systems are efficient and cost-effective ways to navigate the city's congested streets. For shorter distances or exploring local attractions, tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis are readily available. In Chiang Mai, we anticipated using shared songthaews (red trucks) or renting bicycles to explore the city's charming streets and temples. Phuket and Pattaya offer various transportation options, including local buses, taxis, and motorbike rentals.

Researching transportation options, understanding their costs, and factoring them into your travel budget will help you make informed decisions and ensure a smooth travel experience.

On our trip to Malaysia, one of the destinations we were planning to visit was Penang Island and especially the Georgetown area. So when we were planning, we decided to stay for three days (two nights) in Penang as well. If you are planning to visit Malaysia soon remember to save at least a couple of days to explore Penang as well. We had to cover a lot of things during our two-day stay in a rush. So if you are making travel plans add a couple of days to explore Penang in a relaxed mode as well.

Penang is a beautiful island belonging to Malaysia. There are several different ways to arrive in Penang from Kuala Lumpur.

• Plane - 1 hr
• Train - 4 hr
• Bus - 6hr

If you prefer you can take a flight to Penang. Penang has an international airport. If you are in Kuala Lumpur you can of cause take a flight from KLIA to Penang International Airport. As per my understanding, it would take around an hour to travel from KLIA to Penang International Airport.  That would be the quickest and easiest option. But the cost is higher compared to the other options. So if you are coming outside of Malaysia you can search for flights to Penang and book them. It might be less costly than you booking an air ticket as a separate journey. There are local airlines operating between KLIA and Penang so check for those as well since the cost will be lesser in those.

Another option would be to take the KTM ETS Express train. This option would be less costly than booking air tickets and of course, it will take more time to travel. When we were checking for these options the ticket price per person was around 85 MYR. The travel time was around 4 hours (this might change where you are starting the journey). Since I was in the KL Sentral area the train station was close by and within walking distance. The train station that you need to take a ticket is to Butterworth train station. So when booking the tickets keep that in mind as well. From Butterworth station, you must take a Taxi, Bus, or ferry to Penang Island.

As per our schedule, we were planning to go to Penang on the second day of our tour (The day after we arrive in Malaysia). So since the dates were confirmed I tried to do the train ticket booking online even before going to Malaysia. But I was so unlucky there. All tickets have been sold and no tickets were available to be purchased. So I thought to check for an alternative option after going to Malaysia and that was a huge mistake that we did.

When we arrived in Malaysia we checked for possible options to go to Penang. We went to the KTM train station as well to see if there is any possibility to get a ticket. But it wasn't successful. So we had to look for other options. Another main option was to go there by bus. There were Luxury buses going from KL to Penang. But for some reason, those buses which were scheduled in the morning had been booked and no seats were available. There was a bus scheduled at around 2.30 PM. Without hesitation, we booked two seats. So get the bus we had to go to Kuala Lumpur, TBS (TerminalBersepaduSelatan). We did the booking via EasyBook Application. It was super easy to make the reservation. The bus ticket cost per person was MYR 55. So after doing the booking we arrived at the Bus Station and waited for the bus.  The destination of the bus was Penang, Penang Sentral (Butterworth) bus station. After the bus arrived at the station we got into the bus and the journey started. Most of the time bus travel on highways. After traveling for around 2hrs or 3hrs the bus stopped at a service area where the bus waited for around 10-15 minutes. Sitting inside the bus for 6 continuous hours was the hard part of this journey. Around 9 PM we were able to arrive at Penang Bus station. Then we booked a Grab taxi from there to go to the hotel that we booked.

The hotel we booked was OYO 998 Queen City Hotel. It is located in Georgetown.

We did the booking via Booking.com. We selected that because it was quite close to the places that we were planning to visit. After arriving at the hotel we were able to check in successfully and we were shown the room. But it was not what we had in our minds. We didn't expect a luxury hotel room. But this place was not worth the money. The room was not that clean as well as the bathroom was. Since we didn't have any other option we stayed there. We didn't have anything after lunch we had on the way to Penang. So we were really hungry. But we were not sure whether any shops would be open to purchase food since it was past 10 PM. We asked the hotel for any close by location to have some food.  They directed us to a nearby street and it seemed like a street with street food. It was a busy place and we bought a Char Keow Teow and Fried Rice to eat. It was the first time we had Char Keow Teow and it was a good experience to try it. After having dinner we directly headed to the hotel since we were so much tired from the day. So we called it a day and headed for a good night's sleep.

The next day was the main part of our journey. We had planned a lot of things to cover during our two-day stay. But due to some traveling issues we had, we had to revisit our plan. So we changed the plan and kept only a few places to visit during our stay in Georgetown. So we got up early and started visiting the places.

Georgetown is a world heritage city named by UNESCO. It truly is a beautiful city. It has a lot of things that are inherited from the colonial era. The architecture of the buildings reminds us of the colonial era. Georgetown is just one city in Penang. But due to time constraints, we got time only to visit Georgetown.

Georgetown has some iconic places that tourists visit. So whenever tourists visit Georgetown they have them in their travel plan. So similarly we were also planning to visit the same places. Georgetown has wall paintings spread throughout the city in different places. So what travelers do is find those places on maps and go to them and take pictures with them. So we also did a Google search and found the locations and started walking towards them. These paintings are on different streets so it would be really easy if you use a map to find those.

Another significant place that most tourists visit is the Georgetown Fire Station.

A thing that we noticed was the restaurants and shops in Georgetown were not open til 10 AM or so (at least during the period we stayed there). We couldn't find a place to have breakfast before that time on both days.

Another place that tourists visit is the Chew Jetty.

After visiting the Chew Jetty we had our breakfast in a nearby small restaurant. There also we had the Char Keow Teow for breakfast with some juice.

After having breakfast we continued the street paintings hunt again. By around 12 PM we were so tired. It was a sunny day there and since we walked since morning we felt so tired. So we decided to stop the wall paintings hunt and go to the next destination. That was the Upside Down Museum.

Upside Down Museum is located in Georgetown and many tourists and locals go there. That place has really good backgrounds created to take upside-down photos.  It's like in that building they have different rooms with different backgrounds. So we have to take photos in one room and move to the other likewise. Each room has supporting personnel and they tell us how to pose. Then they take photos from our cameras or from their ones. They really do their job well. They know where exactly to stay and what exactly to pose. The lighting was also perfect for those photos. We really enjoyed it.

After that, we headed to a nearby restaurant to have lunch. After having lunch we planned to go to a nearby place to have dessert. We were planning to have the famous Cendol. Georgetown is famous for cendol and they have some iconic places for them as well. So we decided to go to the  Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul. When we went there the place was so crowded. I had to wait in the queue to buy it. It was super tasty. It had a mix of rice noodles, ice cream, peas, and some coconutty flavor as well. Since we were full after lunch we bought just one Cendol so we could share. But after tasting it we felt like we could have bought two.

After having Cendol we decided to go back to the hotel since we were so tired after walking. So we took a Grab taxi from there to the hotel since we were a bit away from the hotel. After waiting another couple of hours at the hotel and charging our phones and other devices we decided to go back to the streets again. So checked for street foot markets nearby and headed to New Lane Street Food stalls. One thing we noticed and experienced it if you order a soup it comes in really big bowls.

In certain places, we felt like it was too much for two people as well. Then after that, we headed to the Chulia Street Night Hawker Stalls. That was also a street food market. After roaming around the streets we again headed back to the hotel. Again it was a so tiring day for us. So we quickly fell asleep and called it a day.

So the next day was the 3rd day that we were in Penang and we had to leave Penang as well in the evening. At this moment we felt like it would be great if we had another couple of days to stay there because there is a lot to explore in Penang.

Our train was scheduled to start from Butterworth station around noon and we arrived at the station around 11.30 AM.  So we had to wait for some time there at the station. The train was a luxury train and it went to KL Sentral from Butterworth at around 4hrs.

The train has around 8-10 compartments in it and it's an electric train. It has a restaurant as well. So the train started the journey at the exact time and it was a really smooth journey. If we had the opportunity to come to Penang by train our journey could have been more successful and would have been really smooth. So around 4.30 PM or so we were able to arrive at KL Sentral and that marked the end of our journey to Penang and Georgetown. The places that we covered up might be fewer but we enjoyed it to the fullest. So it was a really memorable journey for both of us.

So as a summary here are some highlights from our visit.

• You won't be able to cover everything in 2 days.
• The easiest option for going and coming back from Penang would be by using the KTM ETS train. So book them in advance to avoid any travel issues.
• Use google maps or any other map application to find out the places to visit.  
• Food is plenty in Georgetown. There are a lot of street food markets available
• Try the famous Cendol

As I have mentioned before the places that we got to visit were very few and Penang has a lot more to offer if you have more time. The area we covered was just one small town in Penang and the island has many more locations to travel including super beaches and forest reserves.
